I am sad to report the passing of Richard Douglass who served as an Aviation Electronics Technician and later converted to Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Technician. He became both a fixed-wing and balloon pilot after his naval service and was an avid researcher. Richard was the author of ” A Brief History of Patrol Squadron Four The Neptune Years 1947 – 1966″ and many articles about hot air ballooning.
A memorial service is still in the planning stage and an obituary is pending. Richard’s brother, John, posted this statement on the Balloon Federation of America website.
John Douglass to The Early Years of Sport Ballooning
September 2
I’ve never wanted to have to write a post such as this one. No one ever expects a family member to pass away. We are never ready for this, no matter the circumstances. On August 18th, we lost my older brother, Richard Douglass of Kent, Washington. He was a wonderful brother, a caring uncle to our nieces and nephews, had an amazing number of friends, and was loved by so many. Richard worked on our family history for over 50 years, was an avid toy train collector, an active participant in his church, and the most extraordinary researcher on the sport of hot air ballooning in the United States. Writing many stories in the magazine Ballooning over a period of years, he was presented with the Editors Award last year by the Balloon Federation of America for outstanding contributions to the sport. A pilot with numerous ratings, he loved all things related to aviation and was a collector of aviation art. A Navy Veteran, world traveler, adventurer. There is a hole in my heart and we are all devastated by the loss. Rest in peace Richard, we love you and will miss your smile, laughter, intellect, and kindness to others who came to know you.
